"Is there or is there not pesticides residus in wines?" 16 June 2010 "FORUM” in PARIS From 4 pm to 6 pm on 29 June 2010 "Are there, or are there not, pesticide residues in wine?" In March 2008, the Pan Europe wine study called “Message in a Bottle” dealt with the subject of the presence of pesticide residues in wines. This study produced a “thunderbolt” effect in the small world of winegrowing and winemaking professions. This is a world where discourse, ruled by lobbies, ensures that everyone remains polite and courteous whilst thinking the worst about his partners, friends and adversaries. Why did this study produce such a thunderous effect, at least for a while, and why did the reactions which followed it seek above all to silence as quickly as possible those who could cause a scandal? Three hypotheses: - First hypothesis: Pan Europe tapped into the core market. Some winegrowing and winemaking professions fear for their image and reputation. They only want one thing – to ensure that this study is forgotten and to discredit the content of its conclusions. - Second hypothesis: Pan Europe has opened the doors to a debate and these doors are not ready to close again. And the practical consequences could force winegrowers to provide their future purchasers with an analysis of their wines. Maybe within a few years these analyses could be more important than accreditations and other certifications. So it is important to do everything possible to push back the deadlines. -Third hypothesis: things are becoming serious, very serious. We quickly need to produce a well-constructed and referenced counter-discourse, which will have as much impact if it does not only deal with winegrowing and winemaking and if it is supported by a “politico-scientific” authority. May 2010 Jean-Claude Étienne Senator and Claude Batignolles deputy (both UMP [Union for a Popular Movement]) published the report “Santé et Pesticides Health and Pesticides” through OPESCT. The ideological war is now really underway and the positions are easy to see. Our “forum” from 4 pm to 6 pm on 29 June 2010 in Paris is intended to make this “wine and pesticide” debate more accessible and understandable to all those who love wine, whether they are producers or well-informed wine-tasters.
